AI-powered CLEARnotes boosts productivity by 25% and improves patient experience at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust has successfully piloted CLEARnotes, an AI patient consultation transcription tool, achieving a significant productivity boost and better patient care.

As one of the early adopters of the technology, the Trust has delivered tangible improvements in productivity, efficiency and patient care, including:

  • 25% increase in productivity in one clinic
  • Clinic letter turnaround cut from 5–7 days to just 1–2 days
  • Significant reduction in administrative workload for clinicians
  • All achieved while maintaining the highest standards of clinical safety and governance

CLEARnotes works by converting clinician–patient conversations into accurate, structured electronic notes. This reduces administrative burden, frees up clinician time, and strengthens patient–clinician engagement. It is an example of ambient voice technology (AVT).

The pilot has been widely welcomed by both staff and patients, with high levels of adoption and confidence in the tool. Its success has positioned The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust as a leading AVT site within its Integrated Care System (ICS), setting the pace for wider adoption across services.

The tool is being rolled out more widely as part of an NHS England-funded programme launched in 2024, supporting efforts across the NHS to ease administrative burden, unlock productivity and improve patient experience.

Clinical safety is at the heart of CLEARnotes and deployment support – with close clinician-to-clinician engagement to ensure the tool is embedded safely and that it aligns seamlessly with clinical workflows and NHS protocols.

Manpreet Singh, Consultant Anaesthetist (Perioperative Medicine Clinical Lead), The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, said:

“CLEARnotes has boosted productivity by 25% in one clinic and enhanced the quality of patient interactions. By reducing admin pressures, we can give our patients more time and attention while improving overall efficiency. Importantly, clinical safety has been at the heart of this project — a vital principle to ensure that the fast-moving world of AI can be safely and effectively embedded in healthcare.”

Dr John Jeans, NHS Consultant Anaesthetist and CEO of 33n said:

“Congratulations to the team at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust on their success with CLEARnotes. This technology is helping clinicians spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients — supporting better care, better experiences among patients and staff, and more productive services. It’s a great example of how digital innovation, when designed hand-in-hand with clinicians and with safety at its heart, can make a real difference to both staff and patients.”
